We stopped for lunch halfway to Las Vegas (in Barstow, California) at a McDonalds that’s inside a few old converted train cars. It’s on the old Route 66 road.

After lunch we stopped to tour a nearby ghost town in Calico, California. In the 1880s silver was mined here, and we toured some of those mines. We saw a little building made entirely out of glass bottles and cement (see picture).

At the end of our walk, the kids beat the heat by taking goofy pictures of themselves wearing upside down sunglasses.

And when I say heat… it was around 116 degrees (46* Celsius)!

Day 2 will consist of lounging around the pools in Las Vegas, an early dinner, and a Cirque du Soleil show.
